Report of the South West Regional group meeting May 2017

The second regional group meeting took place on 17th May 2017 at The Well, a retreat house formally known as Elsie Briggs House, in Westbury-on-Trym where one of our number is the warden. Six members attended, including two who had not made our first meeting, gathered widely from Hampshire, Devon, Somerset and Dyfed in South Wales as well as the Bristol area.

Apart from the continuing to get to know each other, the group discussed a number of matters. These included the relationship between supervision and mentoring; comparison of our varied practices of setting fees for sessions; lessons for supervision from counselling. We added to our list of purposes for group meetings two possible activities. We could refresh our training by using the ‘goldfish bowl technique’ amongst ourselves; and there was the suggestion that members could offer summaries or reviews of supervision-related books they had read (in full or in part): apart from benefiting other group members, this reading-with-a-purpose could enhance learning. We could set a theme for a meeting and encourage members to contribute accordingly.

The convenor also offered to collate a regional directory of members, both for their own use and for distribution to help acquaintances find a supervisor; this met with approval.

There was much encouragement found in meeting together. The group decided to meet next on Wednesday 8th November, on the theme of reflecting on the annual conference, and to do so again at The Well in Westbury-on-Trym since this had attracted members from far afield. It was recognised that this went against the idea of moving around the region hoping to include more members; however, priority was given to the desire to build up mutual trust among those who are attending. This raised the question of whether a further meeting might be required to cater for members for whom Bristol is out of area.
