North East England

APSE Yorkshire and NE Regional Group

The group met in Leeds for our quarterly get-together. 11 participants joined either in-person and on zoom. We were led by Jane Bingham and David Buck who provided a stimulating and helpful workshop on using music and sound as a tool in pastoral supervision. Two questions were suggested to reflect on a piece of music: ‘what do you hear?’ and ‘what aspect of your work does this draw you towards?’. We began with an opportunity to try out different instruments or to create sound using everyday materials. Possible barriers were explored: hearing difficulties, technical concerns and particularly, fears around lack of musical ability and of ‘getting it wrong’. The workshop invited and encouraged us to make room for music and sound in our supervisory practice and to explore its rich potential.

As a matter of business, the group agreed to adopt the expanded name of Yorkshire and NE Regional Group to better reflect the geographical spread of members.
