We looked at the article on Competency 6 which was featured in the Autumn 2023 APSICAL. We had a lively discussion.  Some of the narrative included how we both assume communality with supervisees and how supervisees make assumptions about our beliefs or faith. There was curiosity about how the question of spiritual/theological understanding might link with Pastoral Supervisors who don’t hold these labels.

We raised questions about when working in Pastoral Supervision we might need to ensure we review our safeguarding training, alongside knowing where to refer and the organisational structures the supervisee is working within. Some curiosity was raised about what safeguarding training was included in formal pastoral training, or what safeguarding training was useful.

We had a general discussion about what sort of work the group was doing and there was a rich diversity in work in pastoral supervision and many participants involved in ‘portfolio work’.  One member told us how they run a retreat centre, another had a new job in a well-being centre – and the conversation flowed.

We discussed accreditation; one member had just sent their application that day.   The general feedback was it was great to meet and have time to share the richness of our pastoral supervision work.

A MESSAGE FROM ROSIE:  Thank you to everyone who has emailed me and clarified membership and ongoing interest in updates about the South Eastern Group.   If for some reason I have updated the list wrongly and you have asked to be taken off the list, please do update me. There are over 70 people in the area and the list has gone through a variety of changes, do accept my apologies if you need changes made.
Some say they can’t attend most of the meetings, and that is fine. The group is a flexible place to meet.
As I have said to a number of you, if you are interested in facilitating a group at weekends or other times of the week, this would be fine and please do be in touch.

The South Eastern meetings offer a space to reflect on practice and if different discussions evolve this also seems to work well.
I am booked in to attend the 2024 Conference, and usually there is a space to meet in regional groups so look forward to meeting any of you that might be attending.
If you are keen to discuss a particular aspect of work related to Pastoral Supervision, please do share this. Aspects mentioned include creativity, working with people who are considering retirement, how people advertise, what do we give away from ourselves in sessions, how we might use supervision models, importance of authenticity, what might a risky conversation entail,  amongst others.

As a reminder, the regional meeting counts as CPD towards our logs of Pastoral Supervision.  If you let me know if you require a CPD certificate to be requested when you attend, please do so.

More about us: Members come from a variety of areas including Portsmouth,  Cambridge, East London, West London, and many parts of the South Coast and the surrounding area.
The group has held themed discussions, carried out book discussions, reflected on the conference and holds conversations about aspects of Pastoral Supervision. Meeting together can be a part of your annual CPD.
